Starting Joel on BikeTrials

Took me a while, but I finally managed to get my 14 years old son, Joel,  interested in BikeTrials. He is a pretty quick learner. The track-stand is not very consistent yet, but he has already started to learn pivoting. He has been complaining that his fingers, palm and arms are aching, so that is a good sign.

Overall, I am very impressed with his progress and I can see that he is already very pleased with himself... LOL. Now he is so excited and motivated that he wants to start a BikeTrial club in his school.

Lets see how he does in the months ahead. I will be blogging his progress as he learns new stuff.

Its Been Too Long

I don't know what is happening in the Malaysian BikeTrial scene any more. It's been too long since I even got on a trial bike. My regular riding buddies are MIA and I can't even contact them.

But recently in June 2013, a couple of friends from Singapore decided to make a trip to Kuala Lumpur and asked me to see if I could take them to some riding spots. I took them to the Shah Alam lake garden and I think they had a great time!

I managed to take some really nice photos and videos! Or at least I think so... LOL. Anyway, you can check out the ride photos and vids here. But beware, some of the photos are kind or family oriented... :-)

Crappy Crank from Monty!

Last week while relearning the pedal up on the wooden pallets, I saw that the right pedal on my Monty Kamel  219 was a bit wobbly. Immediately, I proceed to tighten the pedal. To my dismay, I could not tighten the pedal. It appeared that the threads in the crank where the pedal was attached was damaged. It was a WTF moment. The crank looked brand new and was hardly damaged.

To make things worse, I could not find any replacement from the local bike shops. Even from the original Monty bike supplier. I called my friends in Singapore but it looked like they do not have any in stock either.

Now I am exploring a number of choices:

1. Order the right crank through one of the suppliers.
2. Order though an online shop.
3. Use an alternative non-Monty crank, which means I have to change the pair of them. And that's only if I can find compatible cranks.
4. Or try to fix it.

While waiting for my friends in Singapore to reply me, I decided to try option 4, which was to see if I could fix it.

My plan was to drill two holes in the crank and then insert a bolt each to lock the pedal from moving. Then cut of the excesses and weld the bolt down to prevent it from coming loose. That is the plan and it its still a work in progress.
