Singapore 09 National BikeTrial Championship - Round 3

The Round 3 of the Singapore 2009 National BikeTrial Championship was held in Bukit Batok Town Park on Oct 4th. I was there to capture the event on photos and videos.

For this round, a couple of things stand out and affected the overall competition; the format and the sections layout.

The Format

There were a total of 7 sections with all riders required to ride two rounds. All the riders were to finish the same section before moving on to the next section together. The reason for this format was primarily due to the lack of qualified Observers to man all the sections at once.

From my point of view, it was great, as I could take photos and videos of the riders in sequence (ran out of disk space... LOL.). Crowd-wise, it was fantastic... spectators and riders gathered together to watch the riders take on the sections making it so exciting for everyone.

From the competitor's point of view, it was not so great. Riders lost momentum as they needed to wait for the other riders to finish first before moving on to the next section. Their competitiveness, pace and drive were mellowed and a bit too chilled... LOL.

Thus, it was not surprising that by about 3:00pm, the riders could only managed to reach Section 7. And so, due to a unanimous decision, the competition was concluded with only 1 round instead of 2. However, the Open category riders went for Round 2 as there were only 4 competitors in that category, and they were able to complete the round in less than 30 minutes.

The Section Setup and Layout

Out of the seven sections, only two were not setup on a slope. The rest were all setup and laid out at the slopes along the lake.

In my opinion, I think Section 5 was the toughest, especially the Elite's route. Upon entry, you will need to ride (or rather hop) up a steep slope. Then you will need to side hop a 5 foot high rock. Because of the slope, even "dapping" onto the rock was extremely difficult. Not surprisingly, none of the Elite riders could finish the section.

Check out the photos and videos of the competition:

Here are the results of the competition:

BIU 2009 China Ping Tang World BikeTrial Championship

Since March this year, Syarul has been telling me about an important BikeTrial event this coming August, the 18th BIU World BikeTrial Championship to be held in Ping Tang, China.

I was undecided until I attended the Round 2 of the Singapore 09 National BikeTrial Championship. It was while taking photos and videos of the Singapore event that I realised, I should not miss this opportunity to attend the World BikeTrial Championship in China. There are two choices, we could go as a delegate or as a rider. And in either cases, the room and board will be fully covered for, for the 7 days. All we have to do was to pay for our flight there and back.

Together with Aris and Syarul, there will be 3 of us. Aris and Syarul will be riding in the Championship, whereas I will be going as a delegate. Technically in Malaysia, we are not a member of BIU (BikeTrial International Union) yet and therefore has no representation in BIU. And so we are going to the Championship through a representative union, which in this case is either BikeTrial Singapore or BikeTrial Asia Union, where Walton Seah is the President. Syarul knows more about this... LOL I will need to confirm with him... :-)

Anyway, my plan is very simple, take videos and photos of this international event. Enjoy myself. Take photos with the riders and maybe get a few autographs.... LOL. Last but not least, I hope to purchase some bike components, etc. People that I hope to meet are Ot Pi and Dani Comas.

So from now until then, the only thing that can stop us from going is the status of the H1N1 pandemic that is affecting everyone.

Singapore 09 National BikeTrial Championship - Round 2

Believe it or not, I planned this trip for the Round 2 of the Singapore 09 National BikeTrial Championship since March, when I participated in Round 1.

This time around the competition was held in Toa Payoh Town Park. A beautifully design park right smack in the heart of Singapore. Unlike in Round 1, which was held in Bukit Timah Nature Reserve, the Toa Payoh Town Park was free of mosquitoes, flies, snakes and other critters... LOL.

Unfortunately, I was not able to participate. About a month ago, my family and I had been stricken with tonsil infections. It was brutal. I was still recovering... man... at this age, it really took a while to recover! (Hence, no update on my blog.)

In any case, I was adamant not to miss the competition. If I was not able to ride, at least I was able to document the tournament via videos and photos... LOL.

Similar to Round 1, there were altogether 5 sections. All riders had to ride all the sections, 3 times. The scores and times would be tabulated accordingly by the Observers. The competition only started at about 10:00am and finished at 1:00pm. I had to leave early and was not able to stay for the final results and prize giving. In fact, I am still waiting for the official result to be published... :-)

    The BikeTrial Sections

Section 1. A few of the riders walking through Section 1 trying to determine the best line to take according to their category (Elite, J. Senior or Open).

    Section 2.

    Section 3.

    Section 4.

    Section 5.

There's this saying, "It is not the destination that counts, but the journey." Well... I must say that in this case, both the journey and destination was fantastic. Although, I had to leave early, I thoroughly enjoyed myself.

After 4 weeks of no riding, it is time to get back to it again, by this weekend!

    Walton riding the sections.

    Yang Ming riding the sections.

    Ben Loh riding the sections.

Here is a video of Yang Ming, Walton, Hor Fun and Ben 14 fooling around after the competition.

Btw, now I am planning to attend the BIU World BikeTrial Championship to be held in Ping Tang, China, in August. Really looking forward to it!

Things I learned from participating in a BikeTrial Competition

First off, why did I participate in a BikeTrial competition? Firstly, I want to see what it feels like to ride a section other than the ones I setup myself... LOL. Secondly, I can learn so much from so many riders by just watching them ride a section, and then trying myself. Thirdly and most importantly, it is just so much fun!!!!

Here is a list of things I learned from participating in the Round 1 of Singapore National BikeTrials Competition this year:

    1. Favourite or "chocolate" foot

When first starting to learn track-stand, you have to determine which of your feet is your "favourite" or "chocolate" foot. This is the foot that you place on the fore pedal. My favourite foot is my right foot. I was only able to track-stand consistently with my favourite foot in front. After training for a while, I managed to get comfortable with having the left foot in front, albeit inconsistently.

What I learned during the competition was that being consistent with track-stand using either foot was critical to riding the sections. Because sometimes, you cannot control which foot you need to use for a dab, especially when you loose your balance.

If you are not comfortable with the foot on the pedal, recovering from the dab could be very expensive... LOL. That is, utilising an extra dab to get your favourite foot on the pedal to get back to riding.

During a dab, the position of your bike could be in all kind of weird positions, which may be difficult to adjust, maneuver or recover from. So train yourself to recover from a dab with your trial bike in as many varied positions as possible.

In conclusion, it is important to train yourself to recover from a dab using either foot on the pedal and with the trial bike in any position.

    2. Walk The Section Before Riding

I learn from watching the more experienced riders that walking through the section before riding is very important. Half the battle is already won if you can determine the perfect riding line prior to starting on the section. It will also enable you to fully utilise the 2 minutes allocated to finish riding the section.

When walking through the sections try to do the following:
    • Identify possible difficult parts of the sections that will require extra effort and energy to ride.
    • Identify when to use a dab if necessary.
    • Identify rest points along the sections. Use your tires or pedals to rest if necessary.
    • Identify and evaluate the techniques to be used for riding the section.
    • If possible, see how other riders ride the sections and adapt it to your style and skill level.

    3. Slow down and Don't Panic

I have a big problem with this. Maybe it is the adrenalin... LOL. You just have to tell yourself to do it. I suppose more competition experience will help here. But I doubt it... LOL.

    4. Rest

Take the time to rest while riding a section. Relax, 2 minutes is longer than you think... Hahaha.... yeah right! This is why when walking the section, you need to identify the rest points, where you can use the least amount of energy to rest by using the pedals or tires. (For UCI competition rules, you can't use the pedals to rest.)

    5. Breathe

I always see the experienced riders taking hard and deep breaths before they ride a difficult part of a section. The correct way to breath would be in through the mouth and out through the mouth? (Can someone confirm this?)

Anyway, my problem is that I forget to breath when I ride... LOL. This affects my stamina and I am usually exhausted by the time I reach one third of a section... LOL. Som good news is that since then, I have improved quite significantly... LOL. So learn to breath... Hahah.

    6. Understanding Bike setup

Understanding how to setup a bike properly for a section is critical. What I learned during this particular competition was that when riding "natural" (natural means sections built from the natural terrains - grass, moss, logs, roots, rocks, etc.) deflate your tires reasonably according to your weight. This will enable you to get more tire surface area contact with the ground, thus giving you more grip.

In my case, I deflated my tire too much and received a puncture on the front wheel when I missed an extend and landed on the edge of a rock as I slipped... LOL.

Another tip I learned was to loosen the screws on the brake lever brackets holding it to the handlebar. This is just in case when you crash your bike, having a loose bracket will prevent your aluminum brake lever from breaking off (and thus ending your competition if you dun have a spare).

    7. Understand the Rules

Knowing the BikeTrial rules is definitely important for any rider intending on competing. I definitely need to have better understanding of the rules. Maybe after I get myself trained as a Observer... LOL.

I still need a lot of training in all the above areas. There are probably a lot of other things which I am not aware of, but this is a start.

The competition really made me realised how much more things I needed to learn and I am only referring to the basic stuff. Forget the rest, balancing on "natural" terrains is a big challenge for me. Mostly, I trained on hard concrete and tarmac ground. I was totally not used to the varied combination of loose, wet, slippery and soft ground.

In any case, if you are a beginner like me, I hope that the above points will help you ride better... If you have more points to contribute, please feel free to post your comments. Cheers... :-)

    2008 Singapore BikeTrial Competition - Round 3

Last Sunday on 7th September, I went down to Singapore with a friend to watch the 2008 Singapore BikeTrial Competition - Round 3. I met my friend in Melaka around 1:00am and we left for Singapore at around 2:00 am in morning and arrived at about 6:00 am.

We parked in a parking lot in Bishun Park, around Ang Mo Kio Ave 1. Both of us took a nap in the car until 8:30am.

When we arrived at the competition area, all the competitors were prep and walking through the 8 sections to find their riding lines. They had already done the compulsory bike checks, safety checks and competition briefing.

This time around, there was an Open Category specially tailored for any cyclist other than trials. The organisers explained to me that the Open Category was to give other non-trial cyclists an opportunity to try out biketrials using just any ordinary bikes and hopefully, allowing them to build up their interest in biketrials from there.

This time around, I noticed that the Elite class' sections were longer than round 2's in Pasir Ris City Park and a lot of the Elite riders ran out of time. The sections for J. Senior and Elite looked very challenging and hazardous, well to me at least... LOL.

The competition ended at about 2:00pm and by 3:00pm everything were packed up. After the prize giving, I was on my way back to Malaysia at around 4:30 pm... :-)

I am really glad I made it to this competition. By attending a biketrial competition like this, I get to learn something new about the sports. In the not too distant future, I hope to be able to organise a BikeTrial exhibition competition for the fun of it... LOL. Help! Who wants to sponsor???

    Singapore BikeTrial National Championship

On June 21st 2008, Syarul and I decided that we were going to go down to Singapore to watch the BikeTrial National Championship - Round 2, to be held on 22nd June (Sunday). The event was to take place in the Pasir Ris Town Park on the eastern part of the island.

We left my house in Bandar Bukit Mahkota at about 8:00pm and arrived in Johor Baru at around 11:30pm on Saturday night. We spent the next 2 and a half hours getting through the causeway... *sigh* and finally managed to reach Walton's shop, Attitute Bikes, at around 2:15am on Sunday morning.

Attitute Bikes. Check out the cool "Scooby Doo" VW parked in front of the shop front.

An earlier model of a Monty Trial Bike that I found in the shop.

Thankfully, Walton, his wife and Nelwin were still waiting for us at the shop. They brought us to Hotel88, where they rent out rooms by the hours. That place was still busy with people when we arrived at the lobby at around 3:00am. We booked a room for 5 hours which costed as about S$50. Our objective was to shower and get a power nap before heading off to the tournament grounds in Pasir Ris.

A Brand New Day... of Drizzling Rain
We did not realised it until we checkout of the hotel that it was raining pretty heavily. We managed to get to our car and after that went on to meet Walton and gang at his shop. From there, we left for Pasir Ris Town Park and arrived about 8:30am.

Syarul unloading his gears at the park.

Some of the other riders on the way to bring their bikes and gears to the registration area.

Syarul was going to participate in the Open Category of the tournament. I found out that as part of the BIU rules, a rider must be wearing long pants, shoes that cover the ankle, proper shin and knee guards. And I was to be the photographer and videographer.

The Venue, Pasir Ris Town Park

The tournament venue is a very nice community park in the metropolitan. The lake, I believe was contracted out to a company, whom stocked and maintained the man-made lake for fishing.

The anglers all setup to land "the big one".

The fish stocks in the middle of the lake?

You can buy fishing gears and live baits from the shops around the lake.

    The Registration Area

A park rest shed was selected to be the the registration area for the tournament. All riders are to register at the registration counter and after that bike checks to be conducted by tournament officials.

    The Tournament Sections

Due to the rain, all the rocks in the sections are slippery and dangerous. Luckily, no one were seriously injured.

    The Competition Begins

It was a cold and shaky start. But after the first section, riders were properly warmed-up and rode better. When the rain stopped in round two, the terrains were in better condition and thus the skills of the riders started to shine.

Too bad Walton was not participating as he had to carry out the Observer role at Section 5 as there were not enough Observers. Here in the photo, he is chilling out... :-)

After the tournament, Syarul and I headed back to Kuala Lumpur at about 5:00pm.

Checkout this cool looking bike... :-)

During this trip, I have learned quite a bit about BikeTrial competitions and maybe a little about setting up the sections. I am sure that there are still a lot I do not know, but right now, what I do know is enough to make myself some test section for training... LOL.

That will be our goal now, to setup trial sections and hopefully getting enough Malaysian interested to want to challenge themselves in overcoming trial obstacles. And to take serious interest in this magnificent sport.
